An introduction on the Pre-K through Grade 1 curriculum, teacher, and schedule structure of the Nueva School
The Nueva School is one of the top private academic institutions in the Bay Area. Although it is difficult to get admitted, it is certainly worth putting in the work to have your child attend such a high-caliber school! The Nueva School focuses on a social-emotional style of learning which is a very effective way to strengthen communication skills among young students.
In addition, their class sizes are small which allows teachers to dedicate more attention to each individual student. If you wanted to learn more about the Nueva School, you have come to the right place! The purpose of this article is to provide information on the Nueva School’s Pre-K through Grade 1 course, instructor, and day plan structure.
Academic competitiveness
Although courses are credit/no credit until Grade 9, Nueva will ensure that the child maintains a high level of skills in comparison with other private schools. At the beginning of Grade 3, Nueva uses the ERB test and the scores in each subject will maintain at 90% of the level of other participating private schools. Nueva will also host a workshop with parents to teach them how to understand the scores shown on the report.
Courses
At the elementary level, Nueva has different subjects such as reading, mathematics, art, music, and humanities. The science club pays more attention to the study of gardening-based learning so that children can get close to nature!
Because Nueva accepts gifted children, the school attaches a lot of importance to social-emotional learning. With academic intelligence, children are likely to always think that they are right. One of Nueva’s goals is to have children understand the two sides of affairs and to teach them how to express themselves better. For example, instead of saying “You are wrong” say “You have a great point! But I have a different take on this, I think….’
Overall, children can really open their hearts and recognize the perspectives of both themselves and others through social-emotional learning courses.
Teacher Settings
At the Pre-K to kindergarten stage, a class has a maximum of 18 children and 3 teachers. The three teachers include the head teacher, the associate teacher, and the teaching assistant.
The Associate Teacher position is a two-year internship program, and teachers are responsible for curriculum planning, cross-grade course polishing, and teaching in rotation. Students in one class will be distributed into smaller rooms with the head teacher and the assistant teacher. This is so that the students learn different subjects at different time periods.
Regarding Nueva’s placement: At an advanced age, children will show more diversified levels in different subjects. A parent of Nueva said that “children will be divided into five levels according to the placement test at the junior high school stage and adjusted in a very flexible way.”
The curriculum for Pre-K to Grade 1 is shown above. Amei has made a special color code: Pink is science, blue is liberal arts, and green is recreation and sports.
Nueva has its own subject teachers at Pre-K which are divided into music, mathematics, literature, and sports. Children will also participate in singing and dancing classes. In addition, they will dance with Oberlin Dance Collective, one of the leading contemporary dance and music institutions in the United States.
From kindergarten, Nueva’s courses are completely of their own style. Writing, social-emotional learning, independent reading time, and mindfulness (meditation and yoga) are added to the kindergarten courses and art in the studio is added to Grade 1.
The overall curriculum is more interdisciplinary.
In general, Nueva’s curriculum attaches great importance to social and emotional learning and gives children more opportunities to think independently.
